NetDetective Claims

- Locate phone numbers and email addresses: online phone and e-mail directories (free)

- Track auto ownership: carfax.com (small fee)

- Discover how to get driving records: DMV of the state a person is requesting the record of.  The NetDetective website fails to tell potential customers that they can legally only get the DMV history for themselves (unless they have the other person’s consent.  Otherwise, it would be a violation of Federal Driver Privacy Protection Act (TITLE 18 PART I CHAPTER 123 Sec. 2721). (fee, but for self only)

- Locate old CLASSMATES and long lost LOVES – online directories, etc (most free)

- Check marriage, property and adoption records: property with the county the property is in.  Marriage records for self-only.  A person cannot obtain records on others unless you are a direct relative of them and they are deceased or have power of attorney.  The NetDetective website fails to mention this to the potential customer.  This causes a false belief that a person can simply obtain marriage records on anyone instantly.

- Discover how to find UNLISTED phone numbers: Website fails to distinguish between an “unlisted” number and an “unpublished” number.  The reason this is a concern is unlisted numbers can be obtained via public resources.  Unpublished cannot be legally obtained.

- Snoop on your BOSS, CO-WORKERS, and NEIGHBORS: No specifications as to what this means.  There are many programs out there allowing one to legally snoop on people on their own PC, as for others, that is a legal borderline.  The website of NetDetective fails to mention this.  A person does not need NetDetective for this.

- Stop thieves from stealing YOUR IDENTITY:  Why would a person need NetDetective?  The FTC has an entire website devoted to teaching about identity theft, how to prevent it and such.

- Check for lawsuits, court orders and ALIMONY: Does NetDetective give direct access to these records?  Does NetDetective just give links to third-party sites, which charge large amounts of money?  Does the program just simply give a listing of court record information for state/counties?  Much of this information is free via the Internet.

- Does the FBI have a file on YOU? Find out: A person does not need Net Detective at all for this.  They can simply send in their fingerprints, birth information, SSN, and a $18.00 money order to the FBI.  Your site fails to mention this at all.

- Find UNCLAIMED MONEY for you, your relatives, & friends: Once again, no need for NetDetective.  The U.S. Treasury Department has a link to a site, which you can search by state for unclaimed money/property.  Another resource is the Department of Treasury of the state a person is looking for money/property in.

- Protect your PERSONAL CREDIT: Once again, no need for NetDetective.  The FTC has quite a few articles on credit repair and related topics.

- Verify EMPLOYMENT applications: Does NetDetective give full access to such methods?  I believe that NetDetective only gives links to third-party companies that charge for services.
