It’s expected that the majority of people commenting on KnowNothing.Net are adults (i.e. 18+). At such an age an individual should be mentally mature enough to express their opinion without engaging in immature activities such as insulting and degrading others. Given the topic of this website, politics, it is understandable that there may be times when discussion amongst others may get heated. It is asked that you please remain civil and respectful to one another. In order to help facilitate a civil and respectful civil discourse, these comment guidelines have been created.
Keep It Civil
Keeping it civil is the foundation for the KnowNothing.Net comment guideline. Oftentimes civility breaks down when a person allows their emotions to guide their expression or communication. There’s nothing wrong with expressing how passionate you are about a particular topic or ideology. However, when it gets to the point of insulting or degrading a person then that’s a good indication that you’re veering away from being civil.
If you feel very angry while you’re responding to someone, then it might be a good idea to try to calm down first. If you don’t want your passion to be lost by calming down then type up your response in a text file using Notepad. Say all that you want to say. Save the text file. Then, when you’ve calmed down, go back and read what you typed. Does it seems like you’re insulting or degrading the person? If so, take our or modify those insulting or degrading parts.
- Ad hominem attack
- Responding to the post or comment’s tone instead of the actual content.
- Knee-jerk contradiction
Comments that are found to be hateful, inflammatory, or harassing may be removed. This includes comments laced with profanity. You can follow one simple rule. Just ask yourself, “Would I use such language in front of a child?”
Strive to add value to every interaction and discussion you participate in.
What value does your comment add to the discussion? Insulting and degrading others for disagreeing with you adds zero value. One word comments like “libtard” or two-word comments like “fake news” add no value. In fact, such comments will be deleted with a quickness. Excessive use of such terms will get you banned indefinitely.
The exception of using these terms is when commenting on another that used the term. What is prohibited is calling anything on this site (or elsewhere) fake news as well as referring to another commentator as a libtard.
